| | And the story goes..................................... |
| What a great British Car Show weekend. What great weather it was to have a British Car show, including the drive to the show, the show itself, seeing old and meeting new friends again, a great banquet and river boat cruise, having old friends let you sleep over at their house - two nights in a row - then to get up and see you off Sunday morning - Wow! What else could be finer? Well the drive home, almost! |
| It all started that fine Saturday night after the excellent banquet and riverboat cruise, Tricia's TR-8 was acting up, not running correctly, kinda idling sickly. Well being the caring and concerning person I am, I told Tricia to get in the middle as we head back to their house just in case the TR 8 quits. The off we go, Paul leading, then Tricia, followed by Melinda and I. Little did we realize that the sickly exhaust fumes that the TR 8 was emitting was infecting the TR 4A, and we were starting to have a strong odor of raw gas and a craving for popcorn (may have been a result of the ethanol additive). Luckily we all made it home and decided to check the gas odor issue out Sunday morning. After all it was almost 11:00 and we still needed a little time to socialize before calling it a night. |
| Sunday morning came all too soon, even with the extra hour of sleep, but we were up and dressed, packed and had the TR 4A loaded, checked everything out and all appeared to be ok, except for the leaky fuel pump, but it got us there and should get us home. After all the picture taking and goodbyes, Paul and Tricia sees us off, and down the driveway we go, right turn, left turn and up the road we go, running great, but just a slight odor of gas |
| Then it happened, the TR 8 virus set in. Melinda said, "Jim! there is smoke coming in the car", with the look of amazement and shock. So luckily we were close to a major intersection and pulled off at an Exxon station, shut her off, popped the hood and preceded to look for the infectious virus that Tricia's TR 8 shared with us the night before |
| In a matter of minutes my skilled hands and sharp mind diagnosed the virus to be located in the float bowl of #2 carburetor, the new float was cursed with a crack that allowed the virus to let gasoline seep in, thus over loading the float and not shutting off the gas flow, therefore causing the gas to overflow down to the exhaust and smoke up through the interior. |
| The virus did not stop there though, the crankcase ventilation valve also failed, allowing the engine to build up too much internal pressure, therefore causing oil to blow out the rear main, much like the effect some viruses have on people. |
| With a quick phone call to Paul and Tricia, Tricia answering the phone, explanation of the......................Tricia giving the phone to Paul, explanation of the problem and 2 trips to and fro, we got the correct replacement float and installed it. We left the PVC hose off so that the 4A could breathe freely and not pass excessive oil, started up and off we went toward home again. Paul, being the concerned and caring person he is, followed us for a block and a half to make sure we did not break down again. |
| Paul, thanks for the use of the Tricia's Volvo parts, your thoughtfulness and help. We could not have gotten home without you. Just think, we could still be at your house! |
| Thanks again to the Southern British Car Club for a great British Car Show weekend with friends, fun and of course our Little British Cars.
